Zero-sen - Works on Paper 2018
A series of woodblock prints and drawing on Washi paper by Stephen Faulk
Reception: Saturday, August 4, 4 - 6pm
Show dates: August 4 - 19
Woodblock/drawings made on a washi wrapping paper called 'tatoushi'- Tatoushi is a type of paper envelope that has been used for hundreds of years to store kimono. I read many letters that Zero pilots wrote to their families during the war and made the images of the Zero on the tatoushi to recognize that combatants in wars come from families- I hope the unlikely juxtaposition of the iconic Zero image on a paper envelope, mostly identified with the female, prompts us to separate the real people from the American mythology of that time and place.
